Casino chargeback in Ireland: when can you dispute a card payment?
What casino chargeback means in Ireland
A casino chargeback is a request to an Irish card provider to investigate and, where the relevant card-scheme rules allow, reverse a card transaction. It is not an automatic refund and it is not the same as cancelling a gambling account. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission explains that chargeback can depend on the circumstances, available evidence and applicable time limits (checked 21 August 2026).
The central distinction is whether the payment itself is disputed, or whether the cardholder regrets an authorised gambling transaction. A casino card payment not recognised by the cardholder is materially different from a deposit the cardholder made, used and now wants to recover. A chargeback request must describe what happened accurately. It should not be presented as fraud merely because gambling losses were disappointing.
Can I charge back an online casino payment in Ireland?
You may ask your Irish card provider to assess an online casino payment, but asking is not the same as qualifying. The provider will consider the transaction type, the reason for the dispute, the evidence and the relevant scheme rules. AIB states that not every card dispute qualifies for chargeback, and that strict rules and time limits apply; it also says customers should contact the bank promptly (checked 6 September 2026).
| Situation | What it may involve | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Unrecognised transaction | The cardholder says they did not authorise or recognise the payment. | That the provider will accept the claim without checking the account and evidence. |
| Duplicate charge | The same payment appears to have been processed more than once. | That similar-looking entries are definitely duplicates; dates, amounts and descriptions need checking. |
| Service or transaction problem | A cardholder raises a qualifying issue connected with the transaction. | That a gambling loss or dissatisfaction alone creates a chargeback right. |
| Authorised gambling loss | The cardholder made the payment and lost the money through gambling. | That chargeback is a general loss-recovery mechanism. |
There is no basis in the records available for saying that an authorised gambling loss can be reversed through chargeback. The safe position is to ask the provider about the correct dispute category and answer its questions fully.

If you authorised a deposit or card payment and the funds were then lost through gambling, that fact does not by itself establish an unauthorised transaction, duplicate transaction or other qualifying dispute. Describing an ordinary gambling loss as an unrecognised payment could create a misleading account of events and may complicate the provider’s investigation.
Keep separate any concern about gambling harm, account controls, a withdrawal disagreement or an operator complaint. Those issues may require a direct complaint to the operator, a relevant support route or independent help. A card dispute should be limited to the payment issue the card provider is being asked to investigate.
Unrecognised, duplicate and non-delivery disputes
Before contacting the provider, compare the card statement with account records, emails and the casino’s transaction history if available. Record the transaction date, amount, statement description and whether the payment was made by you. Do not infer the identity of a merchant solely from a shortened statement label.
| Dispute description | Useful records to preserve | Practical caution |
|---|---|---|
| Payment not recognised | Statement entry, date, amount, account-security records and communications with the card provider. | Check whether another household user or a wallet arrangement explains the entry before describing it as unauthorised. |
| Duplicate casino charge | Both statement entries, transaction IDs if shown, timestamps and correspondence about the duplication. | Two entries may reflect separate authorisations, settlement entries or genuinely separate payments; the provider must assess them. |
| Non-delivery or service issue | Payment confirmation, the promised service details, relevant account messages and attempts to contact the merchant. | Do not treat a gambling loss as non-delivery. Explain the actual service or transaction issue. |
These categories are general descriptions, not a finding that any particular casino transaction qualifies. The CCPC guidance covers circumstances and evidence, while AIB’s guidance confirms that eligibility is governed by rules and deadlines rather than by the customer’s preferred outcome (CCPC checked 21 August 2026; AIB checked 6 September 2026).
How quickly should I dispute a casino card payment?
Contact the card provider as soon as you identify a possible problem. AIB says customers should contact the bank promptly and notes that strict time limits apply (checked 6 September 2026). Bank of Ireland says a credit- or debit-card chargeback request may be made within 120 days and requires supporting documentation and evidence that the customer contacted the retailer (checked 6 September 2026). That 120-day statement should not be treated as a universal deadline for every card, reason or provider.
| Timing step | Action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| When noticed | Check the statement and write down the relevant dates, amounts and description. | Memory and online records can change or become harder to locate. |
| Immediately afterwards | Contact the card provider through its recognised support channel and ask which dispute process applies. | Different dispute reasons can have different requirements and deadlines. |
| During the review | Send the requested documents and keep copies of submissions and replies. | The provider may need a clear chronology and supporting evidence. |
| If declined | Ask for the provider’s complaint process and retain its final response. | A chargeback decision and a complaint about the provider are separate matters. |
What documents are needed for a casino chargeback?
There is no single document list that guarantees a successful outcome. The provider may ask for information that explains the transaction and the reason for the dispute. Bank of Ireland specifically refers to supporting documentation and evidence of contact with the retailer (checked 6 September 2026).
- the relevant card statement entry or transaction notification;
- the date, amount and statement description;
- account transaction records or confirmations available to you;
- messages or emails exchanged with the merchant;
- the date and result of any attempt to resolve the issue with the merchant;
- a concise chronology explaining what you authorised, what you do not recognise and what outcome you are requesting; and
- any other records the card provider specifically requests.
Keep original files where possible and avoid editing screenshots in a way that removes dates, amounts or context. Do not send passwords, full card numbers or unrelated personal information unless the provider’s secure process specifically requires appropriate identification.
Contacting the operator versus contacting your bank
An operator complaint concerns the merchant or account service. A bank dispute concerns the card transaction and the provider’s assessment under applicable rules. These routes can overlap in timing, but they are not interchangeable. If the provider asks you to contact the retailer, do so through a recorded support channel and retain the response. Bank of Ireland identifies evidence of contact with the retailer as part of its stated chargeback documentation requirements (checked 6 September 2026).
An operator’s response is evidence of what was communicated; it is not automatically proof that either side is correct. Public reviews, forum posts and user reports are contextual only. They cannot establish misconduct, a representative pattern, payment performance or the status of a licence. No conclusion about a casino or operator is made here.
What if the bank rejects the dispute?
First ask the financial provider how to make a formal complaint about its handling of the dispute. Keep the original request, documents, reference numbers, dates and decision. Explain why you believe the provider handled the matter incorrectly, without changing the underlying facts of the casino transaction.
The Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman explains that a customer should normally complain to the financial provider first, preserve relevant records and obtain a final response before escalating (checked 6 September 2026). The FSPO route concerns the financial service provider’s conduct or decision; it is not a guaranteed method of recovering an authorised gambling loss.
Evidence limits and responsible next steps
This guide is based on dated public guidance from the CCPC, Bank of Ireland, AIB and the FSPO, checked between 21 August and 6 September 2026. It does not determine whether an individual transaction qualifies, identify a merchant from a statement label, or provide legal advice. Card schemes and providers may apply requirements that depend on the transaction and the reason given.
If gambling is causing financial or personal difficulty, a chargeback claim should not be used as a substitute for support or account safeguards. Consider pausing payments, reviewing available responsible-gambling tools and seeking independent help.
